It is a known fact that most children detest going to school. They can come up with any number of excuses for not to get up in the morning and go to school. The reasons for not attending the school are many. It is usually due to their not studying for a test or the homework not being ready. Some children cite reasons like bullying at school, which makes life miserable for them and they absent themselves from attending the school.
The percentage of children who like attending school is definitely low. There is nothing that they want more than the freedom to do as they please and this is something they do not get much in a school. There are too many restrictions and too much learning to be done. It is but natural for children to make excuses to get out of school from time to time; some of these excuses leave the parents understand their tricks and the teacher in splits, marveling at a child’s imaginative power and innocence.
At home children normally pretend being ill and the most common excuse they make is stomachache. Parents do get concerned and let the child stay back at home. Some children will also lie to their parents that their teacher would not be coming to school and it would be a waste of time to attend classes. The bolder children start throwing tantrums so that they can stay away from school. Some children indulge in the delaying tactics. They delay in getting out of bed, and then they take their own time in getting ready and eating breakfast. Some even lock themselves up in the bathroom and no amount of cajoling or shouting can get them out. Not at least till the school van has left the corner.
Kids today make up excuses to get out of tests, miss homework submission or just go home and sleep. Older kids however, wish to skip school for different reasons. These reasons range from meeting up with friends from different schools to catching a movie, or again getting home and sleeping.
Excuses given at school, range from family issues to assorted health problems. Some bright kids have their parents as support – a note from mom proves to be a safe bet to get out of class. Keeping the parents out of the picture usually gets the kid caught, if the teacher is smart enough to call home and double check the excuse.
The tried and tested method that hardly ever fails is telling the teacher your pet dog or hamster is sick and it’s an emergency. This usually hits a soft corner and you don’t get questioned much, unless you’re famous for your fibs. Another excuse that almost always works without questioning is citing someone to be sick in the family. You can say your grandma is in hospital, or that your little brother is sick and your mum needs help. An excuse comprising a doctor’s appointment scheduled during school hours is a trick; but be careful! A sharp teacher won’t fall for such a story without checking with the parents first.
